While both programs align with U.S. security expectations, they serve different markets and follow distinct evaluation processes:
Blue UAS: Run by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), this certification is tailored for Department of Defense procurement. It requires meeting NDAA component restrictions, passing cybersecurity penetration tests, and proving operational performance through military-grade field evaluations. Blue UAS drones are “ready-to-buy” for federal defense agencies without additional waivers.
Green UAS: Managed by AUVSI in collaboration with DIU, this program applies similar cybersecurity and supply chain standards but is designed for non-defense sectors such as utilities, public safety, and commercial enterprise. It also evaluates a manufacturer’s corporate cyber hygiene and long-term product security practices.
For U.S defense contractors, Blue UAS certification is often mandatory. For commercial operators in sensitive industries, Green UAS offers a vetted alternative without the military procurement overhead.
